In 1914, Dr. Booker T. Washington visited Orange’s oldest church. At the First Presbyterian Church at 424 Main Street, he gave a speech called “The Care of Dependent Children.”

Afterward, Washington appeared at Ashland School in East Orange and the Oakwood Avenue Branch of the Orange YMCA. Born into slavery, Washington fought against Jim Crow and became a leader of the black community and the author of several books.
